The Project: Lisa Wilkinson, Rove McManus shocked by communal bathing talk

A conversation about communal bathing on The Sunday Project has left Lisa Wilkinson and Rove McManus in shock.

Hamish McDonald was narrating a short news segment about the rise of communal bathing, with at least four major bathhouses opening in Australia in the past year.

He finished off by sharing he and fellow co-host Jan Fran had spent the commercial break “educating Lisa about nudity and bathhouses”.

“I have learnt stuff tonight that I really didn’t come here expecting to learn,” Wilkinson said.

McManus was just as shocked as Wilkinson that people would bathe in a group naked.

“I don’t feel comfortable bathing on my own let alone with other people around,” McManus joked.

“And when you’ve got a perfectly good bath at home with a door that closes and locks, why would you move outside of that zone?” Wilkinson added.

McManus then made the conversation even more uncomfortable.

“Do you take your rubber duck … when you got to one of your little communal baths?” he asked McDonald.

“Do you flick your little friends with a towel?”

Fran interjected, “I think we’re talking about a very different kind of bathhouse now though, Rove.”

“When you say to me Hamish McDonald goes to a communal bath, you do not want to know where my heads going,” McManus said.

McDonald then went on to explain he and Fran were talking about Hammam, also known as a Turkish bath, a place of public bathing associated with the Islamic world.

“It’s a cultural experience. You can find it in Morocco. You can get a good scrub down with the loofah,” Fran said.

“There’s a very biggish woman who lifts things and moves things, and scrubs things. And I say bring that here, that’s what we need – communal bathing 2.0.”

“It sounds like a car wash,” McManus said. “Are there huge mopping things that roll in front of you?”

“There should be,” Fran said.

Thanks to the explanation, McManus said, “I’m in.”

McDonald then added that he was definitely sending Wilkinson and she quickly declined.

“That’s three out of four [hosts]. That’s enough from The Project,” she said, before moving on.
